Manage Both Digital Footprints (OPSEC)
principle
Core idea
Every online action leaves a footprint. An investigator must manage two sets: the subject’s footprint (mapping them) and their own (minimising it). Failing to protect your own footprint exposes you to being identified by the subject.
Components
- Subject’s footprint: map and collect it.
- Your own footprint: minimise it.
- Use a dedicated browser profile.
- Use a VPN or Tor.
- Use separate accounts where direct interaction is needed.
When to use
Whenever conducting investigations, especially before any active interaction with a subject or when investigating hostile or criminal actors.
Example
Running all investigation queries from a dedicated browser profile behind a VPN, with no personal accounts signed in, so activity cannot be traced back to your real identity.
