Post-Mixer Bitcoin Tracing
tactic
Core idea
The heuristic against Bitcoin mixers is not to “un-mix” individual coins, that is generally infeasible when the protocol is used correctly. Instead, recognise the mixing pattern, annotate the obfuscation gap, and resume tracing on the withdrawal side using behavioural matching.
Components
- Do not attempt to un-mix; trace to the mix, mark the boundary, then independently pick up the withdrawal side.
- Behavioural matching signals on the withdrawal side: timing, amounts, script-type fingerprint, and onward counterparties.
- Mixer-enforcement landscape (patterns persist on-chain even after takedowns): Wasabi Wallet (CoinJoin, zkSNACKs-coordinated, coordinator shut down 2024 but patterns remain distinctive); Samourai Wallet (Whirlpool, seized and operators charged April 2024); ChipMixer (custodial, seized March 2023); Bitcoin Fog (operator Sterlingov convicted 2024).
When to use
When a Bitcoin trace reaches a mixer/CoinJoin boundary and you must decide how to continue rather than declaring the trace dead.
Example
Funds enter a CoinJoin; rather than un-mixing, you annotate the gap and match withdrawals on the other side by timing, amount, and script-type fingerprint, resuming the trace toward the cash-out.
