Pre-Incident Recovery Readiness

checklist

Core idea

Recovery outcomes are largely set before the theft. A holder who can produce an address inventory, an access log, and a pre-existing exchange contact recovers on a different timeline from one who cannot. For an analyst, this list doubles as an intake questionnaire: what exists here determines what the first 24 hours can realistically achieve.

Components

Asset mapping and documentation:

  • A secure off-chain record of every wallet address and its custody arrangement.
  • Documented administrative access controls for exchange accounts, hot wallets, and cold storage.
  • Established baseline transaction patterns, so an anomaly is recognisable as one.
  • Regular backup procedures for key material and seed phrases, with the recovery mechanisms actually tested rather than assumed.

Relationships established in advance:

  • Local law enforcement with genuine cyber capability.
  • Regulators in the relevant jurisdictions.
  • Key exchanges and VASPs, for expedited disclosure.
  • Forensic blockchain analysis providers.
  • Technical experts with court testimony experience.
  • Local counsel in the common crypto-friendly jurisdictions.

Legal templates ready to fire:

  • Ex parte freeze applications for the major jurisdictions.
  • Third-party disclosure applications.
  • Emergency arbitration requests.
  • Criminal referral packages.
  • Pre-drafted affidavits explaining blockchain mechanics to a non-technical court.

Chain-specific preparation:

  • Bitcoin: real-time withdrawal alerts on material addresses, and documented coinbase-to-address maturity where relevant to temporal traceability.
  • Ethereum: documented smart contract dependencies and admin keys, a current list of the wrapped asset contracts and bridges in use, and alerting on material gas spikes.
  • Stablecoins: documented freeze and blacklist capability for each issuer used, direct legal escalation contacts at those issuers, and prepared declarations explaining stablecoin mechanics.

When to use

At intake on any recovery matter, to establish what the client can actually hand over. Also when advising a holder or a business on readiness before anything has gone wrong.

Avoid when

Do not treat a gap here as a reason to decline. Most victims have none of it. The value is in knowing which of the first 24 hours’ actions are still available.
